On January 2024, Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) announced a series of reforms targeting the International Student Program . IRCC has now provided more clarity and details to its previous announcements as below:
๐๐ซ๐จ๐ฏ๐ข๐ง๐œ๐ข๐š๐ฅ ๐€๐ญ๐ญ๐ž๐ฌ๐ญ๐š๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง ๐‹๐ž๐ญ๐ญ๐ž๐ซ(๐๐€๐‹):
1. As of January 22, 2024, PAL will be required for most new post-secondary international students who are applying for a study permit.
2. PAL demonstrates that they are under the national cap allocation.
3. PAL is exempted for primary or secondary students, masterโ€™s or doctoral students, visiting or exchange students, and in-Canada study and work permit holders, as well as their accompanying family members.
๐๐จ๐ฌ๐ญ-๐†๐ซ๐š๐๐ฎ๐š๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง ๐–๐จ๐ซ๐ค ๐๐ž๐ซ๐ฆ๐ข๐ญ (๐๐†๐–๐):
1. As of February 15, 2024, graduates from masterโ€™s programs less than two years can now get a 3-year PGWP.
2. Other programs align PGWP length to study duration max 3 years
๐๐†๐–๐ ๐„๐ฅ๐ข๐ ๐ข๐›๐ข๐ฅ๐ข๐ญ๐ฒ ๐Ÿ๐จ๐ซ ๐๐ฎ๐›๐ฅ๐ข๐œ-๐๐ซ๐ข๐ฏ๐š๐ญ๐ž ๐๐š๐ซ๐ญ๐ง๐ž๐ซ๐ฌ๐ก๐ข๐ฉ ๐‚๐จ๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ž๐ ๐ž ๐๐ซ๐จ๐ ๐ซ๐š๐ฆ๐ฌ:
1. PGWPs restricted for these programs due to concerns about quality and oversight.
2. Existing students studying in these colleges would remain eligible for PGWP.
3. New students starting programs after Sep 1, 2024, wonโ€™t get PGWP.
๐’๐ฉ๐จ๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ž ๐Ž๐ฉ๐ž๐ง ๐–๐จ๐ซ๐ค ๐๐ž๐ซ๐ฆ๐ข๐ญ ๐„๐ฅ๐ข๐ ๐ข๐›๐ข๐ฅ๐ข๐ญ๐ฒ ๐‚๐ก๐š๐ง๐ ๐ž๐ฌ:
1. Only spouses of graduate and professional degree students eligible for open work permits.
2. Spouses and common-law partners of international students, already within Canada, seeking to extend their existing work permit will continue to be eligible.
