Clarification on my Immigration Practice License

Clarification on my Immigration Practice License

April 8, 2024

Hello Everyone,

I feel it’s important to address and dispel any confusion that has emerged following the recent terminological adjustments made by my regulatory body, CICC (https://college-ic.ca/). These changes pertain to immigration practitioners like me who have chosen not to engage in the refugee program and, as a result, did not secure the specialized license needed to represent clients before the Immigration Refugee Board (IRB).

To provide some context, there are several categories of immigration practitioner licenses:

Class L1 – RCIC – Conditional Practice: This license is for those who cannot represent clients before the Immigration Refugee Board (IRB) and includes new licensees post-July 1, 2022. They’re required to complete a mentoring program within 12 months of licensing.

Class L2 – RCIC – Restricted Practice: This is my current license status. It means I have opted not to represent refugee applicants before the IRB. This decision is purely personal and professional and does not affect my ability to support clients in other immigration matters.

Class L3 – RCIC-IRB – Unrestricted Practice: Licensees in this category can represent clients before the IRB and have completed additional specialized training and examinations.

At Alexander Immigration Services Inc., I hold a Class L2 RCIC – Restricted Practice license. This decision, driven by both personal and professional reasons, means I do not handle cases for refugee applicants. I understand the term “restricted” may raise concerns, but it specifically refers to representation before the IRB and does not affect my ability to assist with other immigration programs. Please visit CICC’s official link https://college-ic.ca/licensee-obligations/registration-information to know more about the above.

Should you have any questions or need further clarification, please do not hesitate to reach out. Your ongoing support is invaluable, and we look forward to continuing to serve your immigration needs while awaiting any further terminology updates from the regulatory body.

Warm regards,

Hemalatha Alexander
